Mercury Redstone Rocket – Nearly done?

Redstone Rocket

After some work on the base, (thanks to better references), cutting details into the lower hull, and adding a reflection gradient on the paint, I think this one may be done… The Mercury Redstone definitely fills a gap in my historic rockets line up.

It feels like I am on a bit of a roll with the rockets recently!

Now I just need to make some final renders to wrap things up.

  1. These look amazing. I’m just learning about 3d modeling. I’m curious if you could share where you find your reference materials?

  2. Well USA rockets are pretty well documented, if you use google image search.

Also there’s a spacecraft modellers list running as a Yahoo group, which is a great place for sharing information.

But the single best resource I have for this kind of stuff is “Rockets of the World” by Peter Alway. Out of print, but worth hunting down a used copy. There are not that many dimensions provided, but it makes for a very sound base to start from.

    1. Not directly. I model this kind of stuff using plans from the excellent “Rockets of the World” book, which I use as a backdrop to the modelling software. Highly recommended if you can find a used copy in reasonable condition.
